Mescalero Apache School Library Media Philosophy
The program of the MAS Library Media Center supports and enriches the philosophy and curriculum of the school.
The Library Media Center is an integral component of the basic instructional program. Teachers realize their full potential through skillful use of multimedia resources available in the LMC. Students expand and improve their own interests, compentencies, reading habits, independent study skills, critical thinking skills and positive attitudes.
Students must possess information literacy skills: decoding, analyzing, evaluating, utilizing, producing, and appreciating the varieties of information found in media, as well as accessing and sourcing information.
The Librarian/ Library Media Specialist accomplishes these goals by promoting the integration of information literacy across the curiculum.
Library Media Center Services
The MAS Library Media Center offers a variety of services for all PreK-12th grade students and staff. Assistance in accessing information is readily available. In addition to providing various resources, the library also offers a conducive atmosphere for leisurely reading and independent research.
You and your student should be aware of the expectations for usage and behavior at the Library Media Center. Please encourage your son or daughter to follow all the expectations as presented during library orientation and to return materials in a timely manner.
We provide three important electronic resources all of which are easily accessible from the students' desktops:
OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog)
This is the online library catalog which is used to locate all books in the library.
InfoTrac Periodical Database
This is used to access current and backfiled articles from over 8, 000 magazines and newpapers.
World Book Encyclopedia Online
This is a user-friendly encyclopedia with daily updates.
